    TD-W8960N disconnect problems

    Region : UnitedStates

    Model : TD-W8968

    Hardware Version : V4

    Firmware Version : 1.1.1 Build 120912 Rel.67406

    ISP : centurylink

    Region : UnitedStates

    Model : TD-W8960N

    Hardware Version : V4

    Firmware Version : 1.1.1 Build 120912 Rel.67406

    ISP : centurylink

First a bit of background. At the end of December, my centurylink modem finally had enough problems with disconnects(was 6 or 7 years old), and Centurylink sent out a new router/modem. The new modem/router, a Zyxel, worked great, and all was good in my house hold. Then I got the bill and found out that unlike the previous modem they had sent me, this one I was paying a lease payment for. At which point I returned the Zyxel which gave us the best service we'd ever had, and bought this TD-W8960N. The reviews were glowing, setup was easy, but we started rather quickly to have disconnects. A call was made to Centurylink and they confirmed service was working, and since the modem/router was not theirs, referred us back to you. I called and after considerable time on the phone, all I was basically told to do was a hard reset to the modem. When the unit finished booting back up, internet was restored. Of course it was restored everytime we reset it for a while. At that point I was told that since the unit was working, that there was nothing left to be done. Since that time, it has disconnected us from time to time, and then in the last 2 days, sometimes it won't stay connected for more than a couple of minutes. My wife is very unhappy-she is a gamer, and a disconnecting internet is very very bad for an online gamer.

It seems that the further it gets away from a hard reset, the more it disconnects. After 6 soft resets (unplugging) today, I had to do another hard reset to get back on to register here and post this message. Is this a known problem for this unit? Is there a fix for this unit? Or, do I just need to return it to Newegg and try another manufacturer?

Again, the "leased" Zyxel gave us no problems for the month or so that we used it.

    Thank you,

    Steve

Hum, you have the disconnection issue with the hardwired connection or wireless? If the issue is only with wireless, please change the wireless channel and check whether you have the same disconnection on other wireless clients. If the wired connection drops as well, check the ADSL and Internet LED lights when it happens.

Thank you for the response. I'm losing both hardwired and wireless. Generally the pattern is you're sitting at the pc and lose the internet connection and I'll grab my cell phone or Nook to test the wireless side. All hardware is still connected to the network, but without internet.

As to lights when this happens, the ADSL light is steady. The light next to it which is not identified in my instruction book, nor anywhere I've looked on the internet goes into a high speed steady flash. During normal operation this light flashes, but has some irregularity to the flash as if indicating internet traffic.

For what it's worth, this unit has a "swoopy" body on it versus the boxy style one I thought I was ordering. Same part number, but physically different.

It will work for an unpredictable period of time every time after it reboots.

This is the same problem I`ve with my W8968...They seem to have this problem with quite a few models it seems.. I thought TP-Link was a good brand but i`m reconsidering my decision...

Starting to look as though I have to do a hard reset back to unboxing setup about every 2-3 days as it gets to the point where power off resets will not bring service back. At that point the hard reset will bring it back up.

    Hi Guys,

I've come across loads of people with the same problem in my line of work.

In fact at least 1 UK ISP has a status page advising customers to call TP-Link as this is caused by an issue on the router and with its firmware.

Sorry guys if they won’t fix it then you may need to change the router make to an alternative manufacturer.

The issue isn't ADSL connection related it's actually caused by something hacking you router and then causing issues with the DNS resolver on the router.

This "could" theoretically enable someone to use your connection to access other locations without being local to your site.

Admittedly this is a rather simplistic interpretation of what is happening to anyone with this problem.

Best bet is check with your ISP first, if they say that the line and the connection is fine then it's probably this going on.

This issue also seems to affect some other models of TP-Link routers and also some by a company called Eddimax
