TL-ER6120 V1 VPN service fails almost daily, requires reboot

    Model :

    Hardware Version :

    Firmware Version :

    ISP : [/COLOR]

Almost every day I get a call from a customer running a TL-ER6120 V1 that their employees out in the field can no longer connect to the VPN. They are using TheGreenBow VPN clients, virtually all of them on the latest version. The computers range from Windows 7 to Windows 10 machines, and includes my own laptop which has five different VPNs configured, all to TPLink routers. When this happens it is only their router that I can not connect to.

All other features of the router seem to work fine. I can remote in to their server, connect to the router via the webpage, go to management and tell it to reboot. When the router comes back up everything works fine. The only difference really between this install and others is that this router is plugged into a POE switch (also TPLink) and it has probably twenty people connected to it at max use times, this in addition to their VOIP phone system and general internet traffic. This makes this the hardest working router I have.

    Ideas? Suggestions?

The Router support port mirror, maybe you can next time to capture some packets from WAN side to see what happened during the negotiation.

I am having a similar problem with a ER6020: We noticed this a couple of weeks ago and are also using The Greenbow Client.

    Findings 2:
Hung IPSec Security Association (SA) observed in TPLink router at XX. Rebooted router. Reconnected VPN from same computer and traffic will now pass. Tested operation of Dead Peer Detection (DPD). It appears that DPD is not working correctly for remote computers using TheGreenBow (TGB) VPN client. If a client computer fails to gracefully shutdown the VPN from TGB, this results in a hung SA on the router. DPD is supposed to clear the SA after a specified time period, but it does not. Suspect bug in TPLink code. No new software releases for this router were available.

Ask for the beta firmware if you have a ER6020 - I have not been able interrupt operations to test it myself.
